Striker Salvador Cabanas, the top player on Paraguay’s World Cup team, was in critical condition Monday after being shot in the head in a pre-dawn attack in a bar in a well-off Mexico City neighborhood.
Club America striker Cabanas, 29, was reported shot after an incident in a city bar and was set for surgery after being taken to an intensive care unit.
Mancera said Cabanas was shot before dawn Monday inside a bathroom at the bar where he had gone with his wife. “It’s still not clear what happened,” Mancera said.
Their president Michel Bauer added that he believed the attack to have been unprovoked, having spoken to Cabanas’ wife, who was present with the striker at the time of the attack.
