philadelphia marathon 2009

Thousands of runners laced up for the 16th annual Philadelphia marathon on Sunday. More than 20,000 runners participated in the marathon which was held in the historic streets of Philadelphia. The runners raced for a 26.2 miles long track which covered the central city, the bank of river Manayunk, and the Universal City. For the half-marathon, more than 8,000 runners registered themselves while 2,000 runners registered for the 8 kilometers race.

There were 20 Cheer Zones installed in the marathon track and live performances were made by musical bands like Philly’s KiXX and Mummer’s String band. It is expected that the 2009 Philadelphia marathon will bring $10 million. The money will be used to aid the city economy and to fund seven local charity organizations. The road users are advised to avoid the race tracks or otherwise be prepared for big delays. The marathon routes were closed at 6 a.m. and were re-opened at 4 p.m.
