michigan smoking ban 2009 approved by State Senate

The state of Michigan became the 38th state to have banned smoking in public places today, after the Michigan Senate approved the bill t ban smoking. According to gather.com, the ban will not take effect until May 2010 and will apply to all bars and restaurants.

But the approved bill has apparently left exemptions, for some casinos and cigar bars. Reports say that the present version of the bill simply needs to be passed by the state House, and then signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm, both of whom support the ban.

Of course, banning smoking in public places is a cause that always provokes mixed reactions from people and Michigan is no exception. Business owners have already spoken out against it, saying it denies them the right to decide on their own what the rules should be.
